A Short Recap

Last post, we learnt about Peru’s most famous trek – The Inca Trail.  Now we know there are actually three different mystic Inca trails that all end at destination worthy of any jounrey, Machu Picchu. The discovery of this “Lost City of the Incas” led to the recognition of a Historical Sanctuary and World Heritage Site. A great thing, as the beauty of Inca civilization has been preserved up to this time and more than 25,000 hikers every year visit and appreciate the absolutely stunning Inca ruins.

There are many independent guided tours that you can reach out to today to begin your unforgettable trek to the Inca Trail. It is a must to contact them first, to be certain which adventure trail suits the mountaineering abilities of each visitor. You can simply search for them online or inquire in your nearest travel agency.

But no worries, though these Inca Trails are of thousands of kilometres in distance, there is always a trek that matches your group’s pacing and endurance needs. It’s definitely thrilling, whichever route you choose, it could be the most unforgettable trek of your life.

1)      Classic Inca Trail Trek (4day itinerary, moderate hiking)

The bestseller of all the Inca Trail routes, that’s what it is. Hikers begin to be bemused by the awesome trail at Kilometre 82 which is along the railroad from Cusco. The Inca ruins that can be observed include Runcuracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Wiñay Wayna and none other than, Machu Picchu.

This classic trail is where most visitors join in, which makes the tour available everyday. And since groups are easily formed, it is also cheaper than going into a private service.

2)      Classic Inca Trail Trek (5day itinerary, moderate hiking)

This trail is very similar with number 1. Only that hikers who join can opt to visit the ruins of Llactapata. It is also where you will camp on the very first night. Since there is a longer period to trek, hikers can camp at less crowded sites. Just take note that the challenge here is the hike of 12-15 kilometres from 2 nd to 4 th day.

3)      Sacred Trail Trek (2day itinerary, easy to moderate hiking)

If you want an easy route, then this is the trail for you. Trek begins at Kilometre 104 which is along the railroad from Cusco. It takes the shortcut of directly climbing to Wiñay Wayna. In here, you’re able to go with the Classic Trail 4day crowd. Then altogether, everybody walks to the Machu Picchu.

If you only have a short time to explore the Inca Trail, this is the trek that will make you experience the best of the Inca civilization.

4)      Salkantay Trail Trek (7day itinerary, difficult hiking)

If you’re up to a real challenge, you can go for this amazing 7day trek which will take you to the sacred snow-capped Salkantay mountain. Remember, Salkantay is sacred to the Quechua farmers who still live there. They followed the belief of the ancient Incas, of this mountain being a god.

The adventure begins in the warm citrus valley near Mollabamba. Then on the 4 th day, it also joins the Classic Trail crowd at Wayllabamba. It can definitely be extremely cold in June or July in the trails for this trek. The prize of amazement definitely awaits the tough hikers, as the best mountain sceneries and Inca ruins can be witnessed along the 7day hike. That upon arrival at the citadel of Machu Picchu on a sunrise of the final day, every sweat and challenge are no-doubt worth it.
