We all know that salads are a popular and healthy choice and that they’re quick and easy to prepare. Maybe its simplicity connotes it as being boring. But wait, the truth is, salads can be as exotic and exciting as the hula hoop in Hawaii. It can be varied by the different kinds of veggies in the market or even in your own backyard. It can be as yummy as you want it to be, just give it a touch of creativity!

There are many ways to make your salad interesting, tried and tested from around the world. So don’t give up on that simple low carb diet that’s rich in fibre, anti-oxidants, good fats and is able to satisfy your appetite. Check out our 5 proven salad thrilling ideas.

1. Choose the perfect greens.

Salads are best prepared with the enticing fresh greens and a home made dressing.  Fresh cut lettuce is the best, although you can also opt to use spinach. With all the lettuce varieties, you have many options to choose from depending on the season. Just remember to choose the freshest leaves, the one that’s crispy and bright coloured, not the dried or wilted. Make sure to wash and clean the greens in a basin of cold water. Dry them out before mixing with other ingredients. Then it’s perfect for your next salad step.

Salad dressings can make or break your salad. But without precautions on serving amounts, salad dressings can add up more calories into your salad than it should. So watch out! Preparing your own salad dressing can also do the trick. There are many recipes you can search in the internet on how to do it. This way, you’re sure that your dressing has low fat, less sugar, less oil and perfectly natural, without additives.

3. Double the lean protein content of your salad.

Salads can be served as meals themselves. If you often feel hungry after eating one, you may not be meeting your protein requirements and that would really make you dissatisfied. Add some lean meat! Try some chicken, turkey, salmon, tuna, smoke ham and eggs. You’ll find your way to a full and satisfied tummy when you do. So you won’t give in to cravings for another after meal snack.

4. Colour your greens with fruits and nuts.
